The emergence of the "jocist method"

We have seen in these pages that Cardijn's See Judge Act method had many historical antecedents.
As I also have mentioned previously, the earliest specific reference to the See Judge Act that I have been able to trace is in the 1930 pamphlet La JOC et la détresse intellectuelle et morale de jeunes travailleurs.
The same year, the Belgian JOC published the second edition of the famous Manuel de la JOC.
This contains a highly significant and completely new section entitled La Méthode Jociste in which Cardijn sets out very precisely and in great detail the essentials of the jocist method.
This is how Cardijn introduces the SJA:
La Méthode Jociste est une méthode réaliste.
La J. O. C. met continuellement les jeunes travailleurs en face des faits, des situations, des exigences de leur vie réelle.
Les enquêtes jocistes apprennent aux jeunes travailleurs à voir les faits, les situations, les exigences de leur travail, de leur avenir, de leur vie ; à juger si ces faits et ces situations sont une cause de bonheur ou de malheur, s'ils sont conformes ou non à leur destinée humaine et à leur vie chrétienne, à la doctrine de l'Eglise et à la Volonté divine ; à agir individuellement et collectivement pour que leur travail, leur vie et leur milieu conduisent au bonheur des hommes et à la gloire de Dieu.
Translation:
The jocist method is a realist method.
The YCW continually places young workers before the facts, situations and demands of their real life.
The jocist enquiries teach young workers to see the facts, situations, demands of their work, their future, their life; to judge whether these facts are a cause of happiness or unhappiness, whether they conform to their human destiny and to their Christian life, to the doctrine of the Church and to the Divine Will; to act individually and collectively so that their work, their life and their milieu lead to happiness of people and to the glory of God.
The second reference is as follows:
Un Cercle d'études est une réunion de militants qui examinent ensemble les sujets qui sont à l'ordre du jour de la J. O. C., qui mettent en commun leurs observations, leurs constatations, leurs appréciations ; qui se forment ensemble un jugement, une conscience, une conviction à propos des situations, des objections et des difficultés soulevées ; qui cherchent ensemble les meilleurs moyens, les meilleures réponses, les meilleures solutions pour faire aboutir les initiatives proposées pour vaincre les obstacles et pour faire triompher l'idéal jociste dans les cas présentés.
Toute la méthode du Cercle d'études est à base d'enquêtes collectives : les membres situent le problème dans leur localité, dans leur sphère d'action ; ils montrent par des exemples, des cas vécus, comment le problème se pose dans leur commune, dans leur usine ; ils apprennent ainsi à voir chaque problème dans sa réalité concrète, apprennent à le juger au point de vue de ses causes et de ses conséquences, et décident ensemble comment ils ont à agir dans les circonstances déterminées.
Tous les problèmes ne sont pas examinés à fond : ceux-là seuls qui seront à l'ordre du jour de la journée d'études et qui doivent conduire à une réalisation collective ou à une campagne d'ensemble.
Translation:
A Study Circle is a meeting of militants who examine together the subjects on the YCW agenda, how share their observations, their findings, their assessments; who together develop a judgment, a consciousness, a conviction with respect to the situations, the objections and the difficulties raised; who together seek the best means, he best answers, the best solutions for achieving the initiatives proposed to overcome the obstacles and to enable the jocist ideal to triumph in the present case.
The whole Study Circle method method is based on collective enquiries: members situate the problem in their locality, in their sphere of action; they show through examples and lived experience how the problem emerges in their community or factory; they thus learn to see each problem in its concrete reality, learn to judge from the point of view of causes and consequences, and to decide together how they need to act in particular circumstances.
Every problem is not examined in depth, only those that are to be placed on the agenda of a study day and which should lead to a collective project or to a campaign together.
For Cardijn, the Study Circle carrying out these SJA enquiries is the "engine" of the movement.
In addition to the See Judge Act, Cardijn articulates his presentation around several other trilogies, namely
- Formation, action, education
- Education, service, representation
which are also part of the core of the "jocist method".
It is also significant that this section on jocist method features a chapter on "jocist retreats and recollections" with detailed outlines of how these are to be organised.
As Cardijn insists, the jocist method is a "whole" that cannot be reduced to the sum of its parts.
